On August 1st at zero dark thirty or 4:30 am, twelve men met at the Dixon Building in Dallas, Texas. These 12 came from across our vast state in small groups and in ones and twos. Our purpose – LifeWay’s men’s conference: “The Main Event” in Nashville, Tennessee, to hear other men speak about how they became Christians and how our Lord has used them.
After a twelve hour hard drive, we arrived at our hotel just in time to check in, then to the Convention Center.
The main speaker, our 43rd President, George W. Bush. He was interviewed by LifeWay President, Dr. Thom Rainer. President Bush kept us captivated by his wit, humor and truth about his time as President of the United States. Jeff Struecker, an Army Vet featured in the “Black Hawk Down” movie, spoke about his time in combat and non-believers in the Middle East.
It was a late night and early rise for the Saturday session. A true worship service!
Our speakers were Robert Lewis, founder of Men’s Fraternity. The second segment came from Motor Racing Outreach. Yes, NASCAR! Darrell Waltrip spoke of his lost years and the new life he was given. He told of being a warrior on the racetrack and close friends off the track with other NASCAR drivers. He shared about the night that his brother, Michael Waltrip, won the Daytona 500 and Dale Earnhart was killed and how his faith carried him through.
The other speakers gave great testimonies on how God had taken them through some hard times and used them for His glory.
I think it is safe to say that the “Dirty Dozen” from Texas was deeply touch by this gathering of God’s men.
