Disaster Relief

The purpose of all TBM training is to equip volunteers to provide the appropriate assistance during a disaster response and be a channel of God's love by providing a “cup of cold water” in Jesus name.

 

Yellow Cap Orientation

Yellow Cap Orientation is the prerequisite for all specialty training in the Disaster Relief ministry. This training is the basic disaster relief training course and is required of all volunteers.

Prerequisite:

  • Active member of a Southern Baptist Church OR like faith and values

 

Assessors Training

Their purpose of Assessors is to assess homes that have requested assistance and prepare completed Home Owner Request for Assistance forms for use by the arriving units or Incident Management Team. Assessors are generally deployed prior to arrival of Recovery Units. Training covers assessment training for Flood & Fire Recovery, Chainsaw and Temporary Roofing responses.

Asset Protection Training

The purpose of Asset Protection is to be "gate keepers" and to assist in preventing loss of property, prevent tampering or contamination of food and equipment, and to preserve the safety of those whom God has called to service at a Texas Baptist Men disaster relief site.

Prerequisite:

  • Yellow Cap Training

 

Box Ministry Training
The Box Ministry provides assistance to disaster survivors in the form of boxes, packing paper, tape and "Messages of Hope". We provide supplies for disaster survivors to move or store their remaining possessions.

Chainsaw Training

Volunteers who work on Disaster Relief chainsaw teams serve the Lord by cutting limbs and trees which have fallen on survivor’s home or property. It is our pledge to do our best using the specialized equipment provided to us and the skills we have developed, to help those who have been harmed by disasters and emergencies whenever possible.

  • Chainsaw - Basic
    Volunteers will learn basic chainsaw safety, proper wearing and use of safety equipment and basic tree cutting techniques. A chainsaw book is required for the course and should be purchased when registering for the class.

  • Chainsaw - Climbing
    Volunteers will learn safe climbing techniques and proper use of climbing equipment.

Prerequisite:

  • Yellow Cap Training
    • Chainsaw – Basic
    • Chainsaw – Rigging recmmended but not required
  • Chainsaw - Rigging

Volunteers will learn rigging techniques and proper use of ropes, slings and hardware to clear limbs not accessible from the ground. Volunteers will also learn basic information about the various knots and kinds of ropes used in rigging.

Chaplain Training

Chaplains provide spiritual and emotional care to deployed unit volunteers, and other persons impacted by disasters. All prospective Chaplains must be approved by the Chaplain Coordinator and State DR Director. Chaplain training includes Chaplain Training, CISM, and OSFA training.

Childcare Training

The Childcare ministry is equipped with equipment and supplies to set up a fully functional daycare for newborn children through age 7. The ministry is a channel of God's love to a community recovering from a disaster.

Feeding Training

The Feeding Ministry prepares and serves hot meals for those affected by disaster. We work with the state of Texas, FEMA, American Red Cross, Salvation Army and local churches to accomplish this goal. All volunteers working in the Feeding ministry are required to complete Feeding – ServSafe.

A ServSafe book is required for the course and should be purchased when registering for the class.

This class has a cost associated with it which may be paid during the registration process.

Flood & Fire Recovery Training

The Flood & Fire Recovery Ministry has equipment to assist survivors of floods, fires, hurricanes, tornadoes and other disasters. The purpose of the ministry, in addition to cleaning homes and job sites, is to always reflect the love of Christ.

Heavy Equipment Training

Volunteers who work in the Disaster Relief heavy equipment ministry are there to support/aid other units, mainly chainsaw and Flood & Fire Recovery units but can also work as stand-alone units. Heavy Equipment includes skid steers, man lift, fork lifts, UTV’s, and similar equipment.

Incident Management Team Training

The Incident Management Team is responsible for management of all aspect of the disaster. The team will generally include Incident Command, Operations, Logistics, Administration, and a staff Chaplain. All IMT volunteers are encouraged to complete the ICS courses. IMT training is by invitation only.

International Response Training

TBM provides opportunities for volunteers to participate in international responses. International response will generally be coordinated by Baptist Global Response. This training is not provided by TBM.

Leadership Development Training

TBM provides opportunities for volunteers to become leaders at the unit level and at the state level. It is recommended that all Unit Leaders complete First Aid/CPR training.

  • Unit Leader Training - New Unit Leaders must be approved by the State DR Director prior to taking the training

Rapid Assessment Team (RAT) Training

TBM ministry that provides trained volunteers to respond immediately after a disaster to assess the damage and determine the needed response for TBM Disaster Relief Units.

  • Yellow Cap Training
  • Deployment Experience

 

Shower/Laundry Training

During times of disaster, this ministry provides hot showers and clean clothes for disaster survivors as well as TBM volunteers and other disaster relief agencies such as Red Cross, Salvation Army, FEMA and the National Guard. During non-disasters, shower/laundry units are used in church mission trips, secular sporting events (bicycle and marathon races) and in homeless ministry. By meeting physical needs, these units also have the opportunity to meet spiritual needs.

Support Units

  • Communications

The Communications Ministry provides logistical support for units deployed in the field to insure the effective flow of information when other modes of communication are less effective, inadequate, or entirely absent. This can include the use of commercial band radios which do not require the use of licensed individual operators or the use of licensed amateur radio operators. It can also incorporate the use of use of voice or digital modes to communicate between TBM units or to outside agencies.

Basic training on the use of commercial-band handheld and mobile radios owned by TBM. This class does not require any type of Radio license

Training for licensed amateur radio operators (and those interested in pursuing a license) regarding the use of amateur radios in Disaster Relief.

  • Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Training

This ministry replaces durable medical equipment for survivors of disasters

Prerequisite:

  • Yellow Cap Training
  • Electronic Charging/Support Unit Training
    The Electronic Charging/Support unit ministry provides facilities and equipment to recharge cell phones, lab tops, tablets, and many other “batteries”. It also supports electronic charging/Wi-Fi Signal Boosting/cell tower signal boosting/Mobile radio signal boosting/portable equipment to inflate wheel barrows and jump start cars/ trucks.

The Water Filter Support Ministry provides maintenance and repair for water filters used by feeding and shower/laundry units

Temporary Roofing Training

The Temporary Roofing Ministry provides and installs temporary protection for roof damage caused by disaster. This is a tangible reminder that God's love covers and protects all our needs.
